Screedom
July 30, 2025

Nothing beats an adventure in the backyard and beyond!

The boundless feeling of tires arcing through crushed shale like a surfboard rail on glassy waves is a hard one to let go of. Once you’ve gotten a taste, it’s something you’ll want to continue to pursue. That’s what three of our employees and their friends were after as they took off last fall in search of Canadian scree.

Tucker Stark (TR Outpost Manager), Kelend Hawks (Welder/fabricator/TR maintenance), Myles Trainer (TR Marketing), Leif Trott (Heavy Equipment Operator), Aidan Casner (Arborist) and Quinn Campbell (Machinist) have busy schedules, but all found time to squeeze in as much alpine riding as they could on their 6 day trip.

Check out this new video for an adventure with six friends in search of the best scree lines!

Turns earned

With a few radio names locked in, Screely Dan, Screesus & Lynyard Screenard pointed north for a week-long trip to get their scree fix. They chased GPS coordinates with no beta other than watching some Instagram reels and a good ol’ Google Earth search. Their locations were accessible only to a point by vehicle, but they knew they’d be doing more hiking in a week than most of them had done in their lifetimes.

Unlike ski touring, where your gear is light and most of the weight is at your feet, riding scree requires carrying the weight on your back and a one-step-forward-one-step-back type of bootpack. Leif’s 45-pound dual crown Alloy Patrol may not have been the lightest set up, but would rail all the scree it could handle.

Catching the last few nights of camping in the alpine for the season.

In addition to the bike weight, camping in the alpine was the only way to spend enough time riding the lines they wanted to check out. As they trudged up to camp, their gear hung off them like a Christmas tree's ornaments. The crew may not have figured out how to do the bike packing portion, but they should have a better idea of it for the next time.

No comfort sacrificed.

Mountain biking can be looked at through many different lenses. Adding this style of riding to the list opens the doors for even more adventures and amazing times in the mountains. We love taking advantage of these long summer days to explore new and old places. Have a good summer, see you in the mountains!
