When Nico Vink comes to town, you don't miss the opportunity to see him work his magic on every local trail possible. Watch our new film as Nico puts his mark on some of our favorite local riding spots! It seems like every time he visits he stays in Bellingham for at least a month. Whether it's helping with local events or playing incognito sales person at the Outpost, he is a true part of our family and everyone gets excited when they hear Nico is coming to town. We sat down with Nico to get the scoop on everything from riding Bellingham to his favorite places to get ice cream, see what he had to say below. Does riding in Bellingham challenge your riding? Bellingham is definitely a place that challenges my riding. There’s such a big trail building culture in the area and endless amounts of trails to ride. I’ve ridden some of the steepest tech ever in Bellingham. There’s an insane amount of loamy trails, jumps, rock slabs and so much more. The level of riding is also super high, when ever you go on a ride with someone, it’s full on. I love it!! Where is the best spot in Bellingham to get ice cream? The place that Skye and Oliver took me to, I forgot the name, I tried Googling it but couldn’t find it. I remember it being close to Evil bikes. I actually went a few times back to the ice cream store after they introduced me to it. It was a really good ice cream.
Vink style + Bellingham green = unlimited viewing pleasure When you come to Bellingham to hang with the TR family it seems like you end up being here for a while. What does it mean for you to be able to hang out here and connect with a company that you ride for? It doesn’t get any better. It’s just super rad to be part of a company that’s all about riding bikes and fully gets it. Every single time I’ve been visiting I get the opportunity to ride with the Transition crew on some of the sickest trails I’ve ever ridden.
The closest we could get to big mountain lines. You've ridden all over the world, where are some of your favorite places you've been? My favourite places to ride are BC, Bellingham, Madeira, French and Swiss Alps, Barcelona area, and the past few years I’ve really been enjoying to ride in South America. Peru, Ecuador and Chile. Does riding all over the world inspire you to build trails a certain way? It definitely does. I’ve ridden a lot of different terrain and cool places the past 25 years. I also raced 12 years of World Cup and gathered a lot of knowledge with regards to line choice and flow. After racing I got into mx as I was looking to ride bigger jumps etc, it was easier to find big Moto stuff then big mountain bike jumps but as soon as I figured out the resources to build big Mtb jumps, I started building them. I guess the big jumps are kind of Moto and Bmx inspired, Likewise for the park style side of trail building I do. It’s inspired from the time I was riding a lot of Bmx trails and Skatepark.
Crazy to think this is the first time we've gotten the chance to film Nico on his signature jump line, Blue Steel.
I haven’t done a lot more In Bellingham other than riding bikes. During my past visit to Bellingham, we went on a paddle board mission with a big part of the TR crew to watch the bioluminescence which was quite the experience. That’s probably one of the best things I’ve done in Bellingham other than riding. How does Bellingham compare to other places you've ridden? The Bellingham scene is on another level compared to other places I’ve been. There’s some die hard trail builders in the area and so much good stuff to ride. But I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say this. Maybe I should say something like Bellingham is boring, don't go there. Not sure.
