"Hi, my name is Tommy and I'm from Alaska and just bought your new Covert through The Bicycle Shop. It is such a sick bike. It does exactly what you said it would. I just wanted to say you guys did a great job on this bike. In the pic I'm at the top of one of our local dh runs, but instead of shuttling up, I decided to earn it and the bike climbs like no other. Anyways, thought you would want some feedback. Great bike!" Thanks Tommy, from everyone here! ![]() 07/02/09 (by Brad Walton) Klunkerz Downhill mountain biking is nothing new. Chances are, you're far too young to know anything about this, but the origin of our sport was downhill riding, albeit on dirt roads in California. By the time I got my first mountain bike over 15 years ago, the sport was already twice that old. While it's wildly debated as to which person "invented" the mountain bike, it's obvious that it's always been about having a good time with your bros. In the words of Gary Fisher, "Cycling is this beautiful connector between what you need to do, what you have to do, and just going out and having fun." Word. Here's a clip from the Klunkerz movie that gives you a hint of what it was all about back in the day. ![]() 07/01/09 (by Mike Metzger) Caleb Cambern Update Crested Butte MSC race was two weekends ago and they had a cool new course this year. Fortunately for me I have a light downhill bike with some sick parts, it had some good fund tech riding as well as a lot of pedaling, the most I have seen in a race this year.
Cadenced works Ti bolts certainly helped with some weight shaving as well as my other components, Deity were strong and reliable as usual with an awesome styl to add. I qualified 18th in pro men, and ran 20th in finals while running 9 seconds faster in finals. Something I have and am learning is how to work with the seeding runs. This being my rookie year, seeding runs are a new concept to me. As always i am super greatful and excited to say thanks to my sponsors, Transition Factory, Deity Components, MRP chainguides, Cadence Works Hardware, and UTI Graphics. PLease check them all out for some sweet parts! Also thanks to Vastaction.com for the sweet photos for this update. you can check out these sponsors links via web.mac.com/ccambern if you need the links.

![]() 06/30/09 (by Lars Sternberg) Sea Otter Trip - Lars' Story I have been attending the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, Ca. for the past 6 years. So when April rolled around again, I figured what the hell, except this year let's make it an additional pain in the ass by going solo, and driving the 850 mi. by myself. Plus I wanted to take all of my bikes, to do a little extra curricular shredding outside the venue. I figured the best way to do it would be to drive a van, except I don't own one. A couple calls and faxes to the Guys at Transition later (Thanks Fellas!) and I am pulling away from the rental joint in a brand new Ford Club Van with a whopping 12,000 mi. on her- just broken in. A quick pass by the hacienda and I am loaded to the hilt with 4 bikes (including the brand new TR450 proto DH bike), a cot, some memory foam, sleeping bag, a gear bag full of fresh new Dakine gear, and some fresh skivvies. Fast forward 12 hrs. and I am passed out on the road somewhere between Sacramento, and Monterey. Wake up at 5am and off to Santa Cruz, to meet with Fox Racing Shox to do some suspension testing on the new bike. We rode all afternoon on some top secret trail, that's so top secret I had to be blindfolded on the way. This was only my second day on the new bike so I was looking forward to getting hella aggressive. Once all the settings were sorted I was on my way to Curtis, and Amato's apt. which just happened to be around 20 ft. from the beach. They let me pull a poacher and crash in the van in their parking lot. (Thanks Fellas!) 6am again and I was on my way to Laguna Seca raceway. Got all registered up, and off to practice. The DH course was the same as always, but noticeably fast and rough this year. A lot of people hate on this course, still pretty fun though. About 6 runs later practice is over and it's off to the pits to go chill, and do work. It was pretty warm and sunny and I couldn't help but wonder when the rain was going to roll in. Little did I know that I was going to have to keep wondering. That night I poached a shower from my friend Katie's Hotel (Thanks Katie!), and we visited one of my favorite restaurants in the area- Hula's. Good stuff. Then off to bed as practice was at 8 am again. Fri practice was wicked, the TR450 started to feel really comfortable, and I was having a blast. I was taking some helmet cam runs, and generally getting as aggressive as possible. The course was dry and blown out. Pretty different than what were used to up here in the PNW so I was enjoying it. The weather was pretty stellar as well so everyone seemed in a pretty good mood despite the "lame course" we had to ride our bikes on. After practice, I went back to the pits and cruised the bike around a bit. I was blown away by how much attention she was getting. I know she's a hot little buttery biscuit, but it seemed every time I turned around someone was hitting on her. Fri eve I followed the Team Big Crank guys (they showed up) back to their rental house in Seaside. They let me pull a poacher (Thanks Fellas!) and then it was off to Clays premiere of The Tipping Point. The show was sold out and didn't disappoint. An early eve again, and Sat was the big Slalom day. I was feeling a bit of pressure as I qualified 3rd last year. I felt good in practice, and felt like I was riding ok. Come quali's I cracked. I think I placed 35th. No good when only the top 32 make it. That's all I have to say about Sat. I then left early, bought a book, and chilled in the van, enjoyed the warm weather, and hydrated like a mofo. Sun am and the big show. I took two cruiser practice runs, tested the legs a bit, and was feeling good. Back to the pits to wait to race. I was towards the end so I had a while. Once I got up to the start, I located a vacant GT trainer, ans spun for about 20 minutes. (For those of you new to racing, this is pretty important before a race run, especially one as pedally as the SO course) Then my digits were called and off to the start. I was feeling pretty good out of the box, however a little way in I nearly blew it and washed out in a slight right turn. I saved it, but it was a close one. Pretty clean the rest of the way, and pedalled my ass off. I felt fairly strong all the way through, which is kind of a first for me. Usually pretty whupped by the end. I ended up 16th place which was a personal best. I was pretty satisfied, but couldn't help but wonder what if. Sunday night I met up with friends, Jill, and Bryn and we swerved our way late in the night up to Novato to visit our friend the always Hella Aggressive Mark Weir. In case you didn't know, Weir is the man. Period. We arrived about 12:30 am and I crashed in the Club Van once again. By this point I was already dreaming of a Club Van of my very own. 6 am and a cup of black joe, and some open faces courtesy of Mr. Weir. And Bryn, Jill, and Myself, were about to be led on the longest 2 hr. xc ride I can remember. 4500 vert ft. and 3.5 hrs later and we were back at the peacock pit. A very large and aggressive burrito later, and we were off to the pool. Then the best Pumptrack sesh, ever. We rode till dark and we couldn't hold on anymore. Then the Weir's stuffed us full of BBQ, and good conversation. I slept inside that night. First night in a bed in a week. Then 4am and it's back to the Club van for the long trek home. A Huge thanks to Transition bikes for making this trip possible. And to Curtis, Amato, Katie, all the Big Crank crew, the Crankbrothers family, and the Weir's, for letting me get clean in your showers. Thanks to Jill, and Bryn for believing me Monday would be worth it. Thanks to Fox Racing Shox, Gravity, Scott Usa, Five Ten, e13, and Dakine for supporting me. ![]() 06/24/09 (by Brad Walton) A day in the life of Transition Bikes - Covert arrival day video Just whipped up a vid to show yall how our ship floats over here at Transition Bikes! The Tanner Jeans Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to memorialize Tanner Nathaniel Jeans – a local Snoqualmie boy that died in a tragic accident while riding his bicycle. The Dirt Corps volunteers each year at this community event sponsored by the local police to promote bicycle safety, provide free helmets and do basic bicycle maintenance to get the kids ready to ride over the coming summer. Over 1,600 kids showed up at the event this year to learn about bicycle safety and get their bikes ready for summer riding.
License and registration little lady. The Dirt Corps is in charge of making sure each bike is mechanically sound – loose bolts tightened, tire inflated to proper psi and any easy fixes are performed on the spot while the kids and parents take notes about maintaining their bicycles. The most common problem was underinflated tires and misaligned brakes. But everyone once in awhile you’d get a bike with backwards forks or the occasional English bike that was fabricated by alien forces that defy all common logic.

Tom Kept getting knocked down by the kids. In addition to the bike maintenance station the Dirt Corps also hosted a small skills park and a demo jump set up for our riders to strut their stuff. At one point during the demo we had two trucks between the ramps with riders going big and the crowd cheering them on. Fox 13 shot some good footage and aired it on Saturday evening.

A little too much. Hanging with friends and sharing the good times in the Kootenays and all the amazing trails in my area. The other day I realized it had been some time since I put some time back into the trails. The other day I took my saw out of hibernation and started making some beautiful slats for Nelson’s new MTB park (soon to be built) I Love the look of fresh new cedar slats. Don’t worry the wood was all dead fall and I had a permit.

![]() 06/18/09 (by Mike Metzger) Farah Ahmed: And her adventures with her Syren.
It's been nine months living with the Syren – it's been magical. After wasting years of precious trail time on a man's bike, I'm kicking myself I didn't get one sooner. After a day's shredding at the awesome Silver Star B.C., our guide, host and chauffeur for the week, (the infamous) Johnny Smoke suggested I should think about getting a women's-specific bike as my then current bike...naming no names...was holding me back something rotten! So the next day, with horrendous images of a pink ladies' cruiser with leather handlebar tassels etched in my mind, we headed off to CyclePath in Kelowna, and that's where I met the bike of my dreams...my pearly white Syren.
By that afternoon, with my holiday travel money severely depleted but still enough for some sweet Okanagan cider, Johnny had built her up into full working order. All those days being a wrench-monkey for Barb had paid off and we were straight out the door and hitting the Builders trails in Westbank. I was loving the new confidence-inspiring ride...big smile from top to bottom as I started hitting stunts left, right and center...well a few more than I'd done a few days before!
Day 2...morning breaks, but sadly for my other half, Oli, that wasn't the only thing! With my new rig lapping up the bumps and inspiring me to push the envelope, Oli, my other half pushed it a bit too far on a 7ft step-down and ended up in Kelowna General with a broken left humerus (and no, he's not on Transition tubing!).
But after an afternoon in hospital with a broken but morphined-up boyfriend in tow, I didn't want to stop riding, so after a day of convalescing in Westbank, we all headed out to Oliver (no, Oli didn't see the humorous side of it either...pun intended!), to hook up with Transition royalty in the form of Sir Brad Walton and a bunch of other riders, for a spot of backcountry heaven. In short, Oliver rocked!
For the rest of our holiday we travelled as planned – despite Oli's broken arm – onwards to Whistler, where the Syren really shone. It was eating up all the trails and as the Oli was out of action, it left just me, the bike and the helmet camera to discover the Mecca of mountain biking. It was a whole other world and I was loving it thanks to the new steed. Every turn, berm and table was so much easier, more controllable and so much more enjoyable on a rig that fitted me! It had to be the Syren as I wouldn't have even contemplated riding some of the trails on my old Ellsw...umm, the other one! The Syren was my long lost friend and we were having the time of our lives on the big mountain – sadly though, there was no one to take any action photos as I was riding on my own for the week we were out there!
Back in the UK, I spent the rest of the summer riding local spots like Chicksands, Penshurst, Swinley and the Bull Track, but there's nothing like the Canada flow...just short courses, a little uphill (ugh!), and certainly no chairlifts, so it was really good to find that the Syren wasn't averse to a bit of uphill and not just a ladies' gravity rig. Towards the end of the year, a fellow female gravity junkie friend Beth was so convinced of the Syren's performance after taking mine out for a run, that she convinced her other half that a Syren would be good for her too. So, on Christmas day, low and behold there were now two Syrens on the Chicksands scene!
Come the British winter, I had a call from a friend who was writing an article for a UK women's health magazine 'Zest', who were doing a feature on bike tribes. Apparently I was perfect to represent the 'extreme' end of the scene, but explaining that 'free ride' was a state of mind and not just two words was lost on them, but hey, at least I could pose with my rig, freshly fitted with matching pink Oury grips at the photoshoot!
To be totally honest, the Syren has given me so much more confidence over my old bike, so much so that I've even started to hit the amateur racing circuit too. This season I've entered two amateur DH races, notching up one win at PORC in Kent and one...well, let's just say the other girls were a lot younger than me!
Fort William... here I come! ![]() 06/17/09 (by Brad Walton) Katie Hayes interview on MarthaHucker.com Katie Hayes was recently interviewed on MarthaHucker.com and talks about the love of her life- her Transition Syren! Even better, she has a great vid posted online to showcase her riding her hometown trails around Whitefish, Montana.
"...that’s the Syren and I love it. I went from a Kona Stinky to this bike and the differences in having a women’s specific ride are incredibly apparent. The Syren frame is shorter, making the bike more compact and easier to move around. It is a six inch bike, but feels great shredding anything from tight and tech to fast and jumpy." full interview HERE Here's the vid so enjoy! |Katie Hayes Promo from 406 Productions on Vimeo. ![]() 06/16/09 (by Mike Metzger) Steph Nychka Freeride Foundation chose Transition Rider Steph Nychka as their June featured rider.
